Apple proudly claims that the back glass on the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X is the strongest glass ever used on the smartphone. The reality seems to be totally different because users report the damage after first drop. Interesting is the fact that the back glass repair is not listed by Apple as one of possible repairs. Your iPhone needs to be replaced, for the cost of £300-£500.
After seeing those reports how easy it is to break the back glass, we have search for replacement glass, knowing how popular the repair is going to be. We have replaced hundreds of back glass on Sony Xperia, Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, S8, Google Pixel so could the iPhone 8 surprise us ? It did.
The lady booked the repair day before needing same day service, while waiting. When we received the iPhone 8 Plus with broken back, it looked quite badly damaged. We offered repair within 3 hours.
So lets start the repair. First impressions ? The glass is fitted like a stone ! It is not coming off, it needs to be crushed, it cannot be moved ! We have started without disassembling it thinking that we can access it from outside but we quickly realised that it would take a week. We needed to disassemble the iPhone 8 Plus completely, remove the logic board and all components to properly heat the frame.
Since it was easier to remove the back glass, it was still very difficult and time consuming process. I would rate the phone’s design very poor. Changing the glass cannot be done by not experienced technicians, the phone can easily be damaged.
We have managed to replace the glass and assemble the phone. We have tested it and all works fine. However the repair took us much longer than expected. The cost of repair has been increased since then. My advice ? Better not break your iPhone 8, 8 Plus or X. Get a case.
Picture of the broken iPhone 8 Plus below. No final result included, we got too excited and forgot to picture it after repair.
If you are in need of changing the back glass on your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or the iPhone X, we can do it but please note your iPhone will not be waterproof after repair, there may be some cosmetic dents to the plastic bezel around the back glass and the camera lens frame. The cost of repair is high and justified by the time we need to spend fixing your iPhone.
