It powers on, but it will not behave.
Assessment first: we tell you what can be recovered from your MacBook, and what the recovery costs, before any recovery work starts. Dead MacBooks, liquid damage, failed or soldered storage. On Retina models the SSD is soldered to the logic board, so recovery is board-level work. The data comes first, whether or not the MacBook itself is worth repairing.
Good to know: If nothing can be recovered, there is nothing further to pay. The assessment fee is not refunded – it covers the work of finding out.

Which Mac mini is yours?
The repair depends on which generation you have, and they look identical from the outside. Click the Apple menu › About This Mac – the model number is on the same line as the year. If it will not switch on, it is printed in small type on the underside.

What can actually be upgraded, by generation
This is the question we are asked most about the mini, and the answer changed twice. The 2010–2012 machines take user-replaceable memory and a standard 2.5-inch drive, and several will take two drives. The 2014 has soldered memory but a serviceable drive. The 2018 Intel machine takes standard memory again – up to 64 GB – but its SSD is tied to the board. Every Apple silicon mini from 2020 onward has memory inside the chip and storage soldered down: nothing on those is upgradeable after purchase.
The faults that bring one in
On the older Intel minis it is nearly always the hard drive, and an SSD fixes both the fault and the speed complaint at the same time. On the 2018 it tends to be the power supply or a port. On the Apple silicon models it is HDMI output, USB-C ports that have stopped charging or passing data, and liquid damage – a mini lives on a desk under whatever gets knocked over. Ports are board-level work, which we do here rather than replacing the whole logic board.
No screen means the fault is harder to describe
A mini with no picture might have a dead machine, a dead cable, a dead adapter or a monitor that has switched inputs. Before booking, try a different cable and a different display if you can – it takes five minutes and it decides whether you need us at all. If you do bring it in, bring the adapter you use with it. We have monitors here, but not your dongle, and half of these turn out to be the dongle.

Can you upgrade the memory in my Mac mini?
On the 2010–2012 models and the 2018 Intel machine, yes – those take standard replaceable memory. On the 2014 and on every Apple silicon mini from 2020 onward, no: the memory is soldered or built into the chip. Tell us the A-number from the underside and we will tell you which one you have.
Can you fit a bigger or faster SSD?
Up to and including the 2014 model, yes, and it transforms the older ones. The 2018 uses a drive tied to the logic board, and the M-series minis have storage soldered down – neither can be swapped for a larger one.
Nothing appears on my monitor. Is the mini dead?
Not necessarily. Try another cable, another adapter and another display first – that eliminates most of these without a repair. If it is still blank, bring the mini and the adapter you normally use and we will find out where it stops.
Something got spilt on it. Is it worth looking at?
Yes, and quickly. Unplug it, do not switch it on to test it, and get it to us – liquid keeps corroding the board for as long as it is in there. Cleaning is far more likely to work in the first day or two than in the second week.
Can you recover data from a mini that will not start?
On the older models we take the drive out and read it, which is usually straightforward. On the M-series minis storage is soldered, so recovery means board-level work with no guarantee. We assess it and tell you what is realistic before you commit.
