Where MSI sits in the UK
MSI is not a high-street brand here. It sells through the specialists — Overclockers, Scan, Box, the gaming aisle at Currys — so the people who own one usually chose it on specification rather than on the badge, and they know what is inside it. Which is the right question, because the answer is usually a fan, a paste job or one component on a board.
What MSI support means once the warranty ends
UK service runs through authorised repair centres and a courier RMA rather than a counter you can walk up to, and official part supply for a model tapers off a few years after it leaves the shops. That process is fine while the machine is covered. Out of warranty it means posting a laptop away and waiting for a quote that is usually a whole mainboard — and for an older Alpha or GE, a quote that the parts no longer exist. The upgrade nobody mentions
MSI still leaves most of its gaming machines open inside: two memory slots, two M.2 sockets, a battery that comes out with a screwdriver rather than a heat gun. My MSI shuts down when I play anything. Is the graphics card dying?
Usually not. On gaming laptops it is nearly always blocked heatsinks and thermal compound that has dried out, and a proper strip, clean and repaste costs a fraction of a board. We measure temperatures under load before and after, so you can see it worked. If it does turn out to be the board, we repair that at component level too.
MSI quoted me for a whole mainboard. Can you do better?
Usually, yes, and it is most of what our bench does. A service centre replaces the board because that is the process they work to; we find the component that failed and replace that one. Diagnosis comes first and the quote comes before any work, so you can compare the two figures before you decide.
Can you still repair an MSI that MSI no longer supports?
Yes, and that is a large part of why these machines reach us. When the official board is discontinued a service centre has nothing left to offer, but the components on that board are still made and still fitted under a microscope. Screens on older full-HD models are generic and available; batteries and keyboards come from tested original stock. If a part genuinely cannot be had at a sensible price, you will hear that rather than a long wait.
How much is an MSI screen replacement?
It depends which panel your model has — MSI fits everything from a plain full-HD screen to a 240Hz gaming panel or an OLED, behind lids that look identical. Send us the model number from the underside and you will have a fixed price the same day.
How long will it take?
A battery, a fan or a repaste can often be done in a day when the part is here. Screens are ordered against your exact model, so those are booked once the panel arrives — usually a couple of working days. Board-level work and liquid damage are investigative and need the machine on the bench for a few days; you leave it with us and we keep you updated.
Do you use genuine MSI parts?
We use parts matched to the original specification, from suppliers we have used for years. For a screen that means the same panel type and refresh rate rather than a cheaper substitute that fits the connector — fitting a 60Hz panel to a 144Hz machine is a thing that happens elsewhere, and it is not something we will do. Where a genuine MSI part is the only sensible option we say so and price it that way.
Can you upgrade the memory and the SSD while it is in?
Yes, and on an MSI it is usually worth asking. Most of the gaming range takes two memory modules and two M.2 drives, so the machine can be brought forward substantially without touching anything else. We will tell you what your model actually supports rather than what the range supports.
Will I lose my files?
A screen, a battery, a fan or a repaste does not touch your storage. Board-level work and liquid damage carry real risk, so tell us at drop-off if the files matter more than the laptop and we will recover those first. Back up anything irreplaceable before any repair, anywhere — that advice is not specific to us.
