Four kinds of failure cover almost everything that reaches the bench. What separates them is how deep into the device the fault sits.

USB Drive Recovery Case Studies
Real cases from the bench, including the ones where not everything came back
SanDisk Drive With the Connector Snapped Off
A marketing manager caught a SanDisk Extreme on the edge of a desk and snapped the connector clean off the board. The deck she was presenting the following morning was on it and nowhere else.
What we found
The metal connector had come away and taken two of the four solder pads with it. The memory and the controller were untouched.
What we did
We rebuilt the torn pads and ran a short lead from each one to a spare connector, which is enough to read a drive once. It was imaged and the files handed back on a new drive.
I asked whether they could make the drive itself work again. They said no, and that it was not worth trying – just get the files off.
Kingston Drive That Stopped Being Recognised
A PhD student’s Kingston DataTraveler stopped being recognised three weeks before submission. Three years of fieldwork was on it, along with the only complete draft.
What we found
The controller had failed. The memory chip beside it read perfectly well on the bench, but a flash drive spreads and scrambles data across its memory in a pattern only its own controller understands.
What we did
We removed the memory chip and read it directly, then worked out the pattern the controller had been using and rebuilt the file system from the raw dump.
It took a week and I spent every day of it convinced I was going to be starting again.
USB Drive That Went Through the Wash
A site manager left a 128GB drive in a jacket pocket and it went through a full wash cycle. Six weeks of progress photographs for a building contract were on it.
What we found
There was still water inside the casing and corrosion had started on the board. It came in the same day, which is the only reason there was much left to work with.
What we did
We opened the casing, cleaned the board and lifted the corrosion off the affected tracks before applying any power at all. The drive read on the first attempt and was imaged straight away.
My instinct was to plug it in and see what happened. They told me on the phone that would have finished it off.
Wrong Drive Formatted Between Jobs
A video editor formatted the wrong drive while clearing space between jobs. The original camera files for a client project were on it, and they had already been wiped from the camera cards.
What we found
A quick format leaves the data in place. Unlike a hard drive there is nothing spinning to write over it, and nothing had been saved to the drive since.
What we did
We imaged the drive and rebuilt the file structure from the copy. Every camera file came back with its original name and date stamp.
The bit I now repeat to everyone: do not save anything else onto it. Not one file.
Drive Left on a Dashboard in July
A drive left on a car dashboard through a heatwave stopped being detected. It held the records of a one-person business, including that year’s invoicing.
What we found
Heat had lifted several of the memory package’s connections. Flash memory also loses its charge faster when it is hot, and this one had spent days well above what it is rated for.
What we did
We reflowed the connections and read the memory directly. Most of it came back cleanly. A portion of the older data had degraded past the point where the error correction could put it right.
This year’s invoices came back, which was the urgent part. Some of 2022 has gone.

The connector snapped off in the port – is the data gone?
Almost certainly not. The memory is on the little board inside the casing; the connector is only how it reaches the computer. A snapped or bent plug is one of the more recoverable things that happens to a flash drive.
My drive is not recognised at all – can you still get the files?
Usually. A drive that shows nothing, shows 0 MB or asks to be formatted has normally lost its controller or its firmware rather than its data. We work past the controller to reach the memory behind it.
What types of USB and flash storage can you recover data from?
USB-A and USB-C flash drives, micro-USB OTG sticks, and the flash storage inside card readers and small portable devices. Branded, unbranded and promotional drives are all the same job.
How long does it take once I approve the quote?
Standard recovery is 14–21 working days, Priority 5–14 and Emergency 1–4. Flash cases need no donor parts, so they often complete well inside the level you choose.
What decides the recovery price?
Whether the drive can be brought back to life electrically, or whether the memory has to be read directly and the data rebuilt from it. The second is considerably more work, which is why the quote waits for the assessment.
Do you do the work yourselves?
Yes. Connector repair, board-level work and reading the memory directly all happen at our Wimbledon workshop. A specialist partner is used only where a case needs one and only with your written approval.
