Two different faults produce one symptom on the Air 3: a worn Lightning connector, or a charging circuit on the logic board that has stopped asking for power. From outside the device they are indistinguishable. We test before quoting, because replacing the port on the second one achieves nothing.
The connector is soldered to the board, so this is bench work under a microscope. On an Air 3 the display above it is fully laminated, which means the way in is through a bonded panel that has to come off in one piece - a good part of why this job takes longer here than on an older, air-gapped iPad.
