Case Study: iPhone X Camera Lens Replaced, Camera Saved

Device: iPhone X
Symptom: cracked rear camera lens glass; blurred photos, autofocus struggling
Diagnosis: broken protective lens glass and contamination around the camera optics
Repair: protective lens glass replaced and exposed camera area cleaned; original camera module retained
Turnaround: part ordered same day, fitted the day after

A regular customer brought in an iPhone X with the rear camera lens cracked - and a question that made the job interesting: the manufacturer had told him the entire frame would need replacing, at a price close to a new phone. Was there another way? We had replaced camera lenses routinely on earlier iPhones, so we researched parts for the then-new X rather than accepting the frame-swap answer.

What we found

The protective glass had been broken for over a month. Dust and moisture could reach the camera opening, and photos were blurred with unreliable autofocus. We allowed for the possibility of replacing the camera module if cleaning around its exposed optics did not restore the image.

The repair

We removed the broken protective glass, cleaned the accessible optics and surrounding camera opening, then tested the image and autofocus. Both recovered, so the original camera module stayed in place. This was not a repair to the image sensor inside the sealed module. We then fitted the replacement protective glass.

The outcome

The phone produced clear photos again without replacing the camera module or the whole frame. As with other opened or damaged phones, the original water-resistance rating should not be relied on.
