Repair or Replace? How We Decide

Fixfactor is a London repair workshop. We’ve repaired more than 220,000 devices since 2014, and telling people a repair isn’t worth it is part of the job. The short version: repair it when it still suits you, the fault is one we can fix with confidence, and the price stays under about half of a comparable replacement.

Does It Fit Your Life?

  • Its age, against a normal life. An iPhone has about seven good years, an Android phone three and a half to six, a Windows laptop five to eight and a MacBook about nine. Once it is well past halfway, age starts to count against a repair.
  • What you use it for. Design, video, code and 3D wear a computer out years sooner, games a little sooner. Everyday use makes it last longer, as long as it still gets updates.
  • Software updates. A phone or tablet that stops getting updates within a year counts against repair. Windows laptops from before 2018 can’t run Windows 11, and Windows 10 updates end in October 2027.

What Would Changing Cost You?

  • Your files and your set-up. If the only copy of your files is on it, a new device doesn’t solve the problem. Setting up a new computer takes real work, and so does giving up one you like.

How Sure Is the Repair?

  • The fault. Screens, batteries, back glass and camera lenses are routine and almost always work. A dead device or a board fault is a gamble until we find the cause.
  • Liquid damage. If it still works, a prompt clean usually saves it. If it’s dead, the odds are low, and every day it sits wet, or salt water, makes them lower.

Where the Price Comes In

  • Price comes last, and it can only say no. A cheap repair never makes a poor one worth doing. When a repair costs around half of a comparable replacement or more, it rarely makes sense; a strong case can carry a bit more, a weak one less.

Questions We Get Asked

Is it worth repairing a 5-year-old iPhone?

Usually, if the fault is routine. A new screen, battery or camera on an iPhone that still gets updates is worth it, because iPhones age slowly. It stops making sense when the repair costs close to what a comparable used iPhone would.

Is it worth replacing a phone battery?

Usually yes. A new battery is a routine job, and on a phone that is otherwise fine and still gets updates it buys years for a fraction of the price of a new one. A worn battery can also make an iPhone feel slow. It stops making sense when the phone has other faults or its updates are about to end.

Is it worth fixing a laptop that won’t turn on?

It can be, but find out why first. A faulty charger or battery is a small job; a dead board is not. We start with a diagnosis: the fee is credited towards the repair and not refunded if you decide not to go ahead.

Is liquid damage worth repairing?

Yes, if it still works and you act quickly. Switch it off, don’t charge it and bring it in the same day: the sooner it’s cleaned, the better the odds. Our liquid damage service starts with an ultrasonic clean, then a diagnosis.

Should I repair or replace my MacBook?

Repair it if the fault is routine and it still gets macOS updates: Apple Silicon MacBooks age slowly. Intel MacBooks have had their last major macOS, so a big repair on one rarely pays off. Our Mac repair page lists the models we work on.

Is a cracked screen worth fixing?

Usually yes: it’s the most routine repair there is. It stops being worth it on an old budget phone or tablet, where a new screen costs nearly as much as the device, or once it no longer gets updates. If a screen repair isn’t worth doing, we’ll say so.

What if my files are only on the broken device?

Getting them back comes first; whether the device is worth repairing comes second. Most cases start with a diagnosis. A dead iPhone from the X on, apart from the XR and SE, has stacked boards we don’t repair, so the route is data recovery from £500.

Is it worth repairing a PS5 or Nintendo Switch?

Usually yes. Consoles are judged by generation, not age, and the common faults are routine: an HDMI or charging port, overheating, a disc drive, or stick drift on a Steam Deck or Switch. It stops making sense once a newer generation has been out for five years. Game console repair lists what we fix.

Do you keep what I type?

We don’t keep it. Your words are only read to pick out the device and what happened, sometimes with the help of an AI service, and nothing is stored on our side. If you’d rather not type, choose your device instead.
