Mac Recovery Case Studies
Real examples of successful Apple Mac data recovery projects
MacBook Pro M1 Liquid Damage Recovery
A professional graphic designer spilled coffee on their MacBook Pro M1, causing it to immediately shut down and not power back on. The device contained critical client projects with approaching deadlines and no recent backups.
The Challenge
Upon inspection, we found significant liquid damage to the logic board with corrosion developing around several key components. The M1 chip’s integrated architecture and Apple’s security features added complexity to the recovery process.
Our Solution
Using our microscopic inspection tools, we performed component-level cleaning and replaced several damaged components on the logic board. Our specialized Apple data recovery tools allowed us to bypass the security restrictions and extract the complete data from the onboard storage.
I was devastated when I spilled coffee on my new MacBook Pro. I had a major project due in a week and thought everything was lost. Fixfactor not only recovered ALL my data but did it faster than expected. Their team kept me updated throughout the process and were incredibly professional. Thanks to them, I made my client deadline!
iMac 27″ Fusion Drive Failure Recovery
A video production studio’s 27″ iMac suddenly stopped booting, displaying only a folder with a question mark. The Fusion Drive had failed, with years of project files, including ongoing film editing work, at risk.
The Challenge
Apple’s Fusion Drive technology combines an SSD and HDD in a way that makes recovery complex when failure occurs. In this case, the drive was no longer recognized by macOS, and the logical volume structure had become corrupted.
Our Solution
We carefully disassembled the iMac and separated the Fusion Drive components. Our specialists used proprietary software to rebuild the logical structure that connects the SSD and HDD portions, allowing us to recover nearly all the data, including all current video editing projects.
When our main editing station went down, we were in a panic. We had three client projects in progress and years of completed work on that iMac. The Fixfactor team understood our urgency and managed to recover everything except a few temporary files. Their knowledge of Apple’s Fusion Drive technology was impressive. We’re now implementing their recommended backup strategy!
Mac Mini M1 Failed Update Recovery
A small accounting firm’s Mac Mini, used as their main database server, failed during a macOS update. The system wouldn’t boot past the Apple logo, and they urgently needed access to client financial records.
The Challenge
The macOS update had corrupted critical system files while in progress. The M1 chip’s advanced security features prevented standard recovery methods, and the system was in a state where recovery mode wasn’t accessible.
Our Solution
Using our specialized Apple recovery tools, we were able to bypass the startup process and create a direct image of the internal SSD. This allowed us to extract all the company’s financial databases and business documents without needing to repair the operating system first.
We were in the middle of tax season when our server died. The timing couldn’t have been worse! Fixfactor understood our urgency and delivered with their Priority service. Within 3 days, they recovered all our client files and financial data. Their expertise with Apple’s M1 systems saved our business from a potential disaster and significant financial loss. I can’t recommend them highly enough.
Time Machine Backup Corruption Recovery
A family discovered their Time Machine backup drive had become corrupted and unreadable when they tried to restore files after their MacBook was stolen. The drive contained irreplaceable family photos and videos spanning 15 years.
The Challenge
The Time Machine backup had severe logical corruption in its catalog structure. The drive would mount occasionally but then disconnect, and macOS couldn’t recognize it as a valid backup volume.
Our Solution
We used specialized tools to create a bit-by-bit image of the entire drive, then employed advanced Apple file system reconstruction techniques to rebuild the Time Machine catalog. This allowed us to extract nearly all the family’s photos and videos, even from the corrupted portions of the backup.
When we realized our backup drive wasn’t working, I was heartbroken. It contained every photo of our children growing up and videos of family members who are no longer with us. Fixfactor was incredibly empathetic and explained everything clearly. They managed to recover almost everything, including photos I thought were lost forever. You can’t put a price on 15 years of family memories.
MacBook Air SSD Chip Failure Recovery
A PhD student’s MacBook Air suddenly stopped working the day before their thesis submission deadline. The device wouldn’t boot, showing only a folder with question mark, and contained the only complete copy of their doctoral thesis.
The Challenge
Diagnostics revealed the MacBook’s soldered-on SSD controller had failed. With no physical way to remove the storage chips and the thesis deadline hours away, a standard recovery approach would take too long.
Our Solution
Using our Emergency service, we employed specialized hardware adapters to bypass the failed controller and directly access the NAND storage chips on the logic board. Our engineers worked through the night to recover all data, including the complete thesis document, within 24 hours.
When my MacBook died the night before my thesis submission, I was in complete panic. Fixfactor’s emergency service was literally a career-saver. They recovered my entire thesis and all supporting research within 24 hours. Their team worked overnight to ensure I could meet my deadline. The service wasn’t cheap, but considering what was at stake – three years of research work – it was absolutely worth every penny.
Mac Recovery FAQ
Common questions about our Apple Mac data recovery services
You contact us and we ask you for the type of the device, story of the problem, approximate size of the data in GB and how quick this needs to be done. We give price estimate and if you decide to go ahead, we ask you to bring the device / storage to our office and we start the proper diagnostics. After 24 hours we should know all possible options and the accurate cost. Once you approve our quote, we start the job and keep you informed until your device has been fixed or the data has been recovered. If anything changes during the process, we will ask you for approval. The whole process we keep as simple as possible keeping you away from the technical aspects unless you want to know more. We believe that whole experience should be easy for you so you concentrate on what you are doing the best. We do the rest.
Since each data recovery job is different, one may take less than 1 day and another needs more time, sometimes weeks. If we are not limited by the budget or time, we can provide fully successful data recovery in 90% of cases. We have a number of repair partners that can help us with the most mysterious repairs. Sometimes, it may not be possible to recover the whole portion of your data but for example 80%. That may be because the structure of the drive storing the data may be severely damaged. In such a case, we contact you and try to establish if the files that you mostly need are recoverable.
We need to know first the type of the device and the story of the problem. After we recognize the problem, we should be able to give you the estimated repair time. We provide 3 service levels based on the urgency: Normal, Priority and Emergency. In general, Normal plan aims to recover your data within 5-10 working days, Priority within 3-5 working days and the Emergency 1-2 working days. Please note this is an estimate and we could give you exact time after we diagnose your Mac device.
Yes, we charge £39 diagnostics fee if you change your mind after we have started the work. If you contact us, describe the problem, type of the device, required speed of service, we will give you the price range which is only estimate but should explain the worst scenario. If your decide to bring your device and agree to start the deep diagnostics, we will spend few hours on localising source of problem. The exact price and report will be provided. If you decide to cancel at this point, we will ask you to cover the diagnostics fee which is £39.
We ask you for £39 fee in case that the data cannot be recovered. We have potentially spent many hours trying to sort it, invested in donor parts and the set of procedures of which we have followed, was there to help. We can provide a report of what has tried to be done. In case where the job could not be completed because of an error on our side, we don’t charge anything. All in all, considering that we spend hours trying to recover your data, in case when the job cannot be succesfully completed, you only risk £39.
The diagnostics starts in our main office in Wimbledon. If we find that we need to send off, we will ask for your permission first. We try to avoid it but we have established partnership with few data recovery laboratories that specialise in particular cases and we can do more together! We always use dedicated couriers for transferring your devices between locations.
We are professionals and handle terabytes of data everyday. We understand importance of your files. We strictly follow our procedures that we have worked out over 6 years. That minimises the risk. However please note we don’t guarantee to recover your data same as we cannot guarantee that the data are there when you bring your device / storage in. Before we start the job, we ask you to sign the agreement that you are willing to take full responsibility and will never take our company to liability for losing your data or damaging the device.
This is extremely individual. We always evaluate the cost before we start the job. We never start without your approval. Price depends on type of the device, capacity of the storage / number of data to be recovered, type of problem and required speed of service. For example, data recovery from a MacBook Air with a failed SSD may cost £250 for normal plan if the issue is primarily software-related, or £450-750 if the SSD requires specialized recovery techniques. If that particular service needs to be done quicker than 10 days, the cost may go up accordingly based on the service level you choose.
