The iPad 6 charges over Lightning, and a Lightning socket collects pocket lint in a way USB-C does not. A fair share of the iPads brought to us for a dead port need the socket cleaned out rather than replaced, so that is what we check before anything else.
Where the connector really has failed it is soldered to the logic board rather than sitting on its own flex cable, which makes replacement microsoldering work: done under the microscope, in house, not sent away. And if the fault turns out to be in the charging circuit on the board instead, a new port would change nothing - which is exactly why we test first and tell you which of the two it is.
