We open the drive and find out which, because the two cost very different amounts. Where a replacement is the answer, it is paired to your console — a PS5 drive is tied to the machine it came with, so a drive lifted from another console does not simply work.

Standard, Slim and Pro are not the same job
The original PS5 has an integrated drive; the Slim uses a detachable one; the Pro takes the same detachable drive as an accessory. - How long does it take? Two to three working days, longer if a matched drive has to be ordered for your model.
- There is a disc stuck inside. Should I force it out? No — forcing it is what turns a jam into a new drive. Bring it in with the disc where it is; we get both out.
- Can I just buy a second-hand drive and fit it? Not on a PS5. The drive is paired to the console at board level and needs matching, which is the part people discover after buying one.
- Does it affect my digital games? No. The drive is separate from storage and your account.
