If an iPhone camera is not working, identify exactly what fails: front or rear camera, one zoom level, focus, flash, stabilisation or every camera app. A black preview can be software, but shaking, clicking, blurred focus after impact or failure of one lens usually points towards hardware.
Checks that do not risk the phone
- Remove any case, magnetic mount or lens protector.
- Clean the external lens glass with a soft, dry cloth.
- Test the camera in Apple’s Camera app and one other trusted app.
- Switch between front and rear cameras and available zoom levels.
- Restart the phone and install a pending iOS update if the device is otherwise stable.
What different symptoms suggest
A single lens failing while the others work can indicate one camera module. Constant shaking or buzzing is often related to optical stabilisation. A black image after a drop may come from a disconnected or damaged module. Cracked outer lens glass can allow dust and moisture inside even while the camera still works.
Camera faults linked to other systems
Face ID, flash and camera functions can interact with other sensors and power lines. Liquid damage or a logic-board fault may disable more than one component. Replacing the visible camera is not a reliable fix until the phone has been tested.
Will repair affect your photos?
Replacing a camera module does not normally erase stored photos. Back up first if possible. If the phone is unstable, liquid damaged or unable to boot, tell us that the data is the priority before software troubleshooting begins.
