Common Acer Repairs

What comes through the door on an Acer, and what each job actually involves.

Fixfactor Laptops Motherboard Diagnostics With Microscope

Motherboard & board-level repair

Components replaced under a microscope instead of a quote for a whole new board – which on an Acer is often more than the machine is worth.

Screen replacement

The most common Acer job. Panels range from plain HD to 165Hz gaming, and the price follows the panel. Three checks to run first.

Fixfactor Motherboard Component Removal For Repair With Hot Air

Charging ports & power

A socket that only works at an angle. It is soldered to the board on most Acers, which is why a lot of shops turn it away.

Battery replacement

For an Acer that dies without warning, or a swollen cell bowing the base.

Keyboard replacement

Dead or repeating keys, and full top-case replacements where the keyboard is riveted in.

Fixfactor Laptops Motheboard Diagnostics with Fluke Multimeter

Diagnostics – when it will not turn on

No power, no picture, or shutting down under load. On a budget machine this matters twice over, because it decides whether repair makes sense at all.

Nitro & Predator thermals

Strip, clean and repaste, with temperatures measured under load before and after.

Hinges & cracked cases

Common on the thinner Aspires and on school Chromebooks. Cheap early, a new lid late.

Storage, SSD & data

The cheapest way to make an older Aspire usable again, and recovery when the drive has stopped reading.

Windows & software faults

Blue screens and boot failures that are Windows, not the Aspire. A clean install puts every driver back.

Something else?

Fans, ports, casings, firmware.

Which Acer do you have?

Pick the name on the lid. It tells us which parts your machine takes and, on the cheaper ranges, whether a repair is the right call at all.

Aspire 3 · 5 · 7 – 14″ to 17″

The Acer we see most, and the one where the honest answer matters most: some faults are worth fixing on an Aspire and some are not.

What we see most on these

  • Screens – the widest range of panels
  • Charging port wear
  • Slow on a spinning drive – an SSD, not a new laptop

Not listed? We still repair it – tell us what you have.

Is It Worth Repairing?

Acer builds the cheapest machines we handle, so this is a real question rather than a polite one. Here is how we answer it, before you spend anything.

We Diagnose First

The fault is identified before any figure is quoted. On a budget machine a guess is worse than useless.

We Say When It Is Not

If the repair costs more than the laptop is worth, you hear that, and you pay for the diagnosis and nothing else.

Cheap Fixes First

An SSD and a clean install turns most slow older Aspires around for a fraction of a new machine.

And When It Is

A board repair on a gaming Predator or a two-year-old Swift is usually money well spent. We will show you the arithmetic.

Nobody makes money selling somebody a repair they should not have bought. It comes back, and so does the review.

Motherboard Repair, in Plain Terms

The work other shops send to us: the board repaired at component level rather than replaced.

It Will Not Turn On

Power rails followed with a meter and a thermal camera until we find where the voltage stops.

BGA Rework

Reballing and replacing the large chips on a rework station with a controlled heat profile.

Component-Level Replacement

Capacitors, MOSFETs, voltage regulators, blown fuses.

Charging Ports

Taken off and replaced, rather than replacing the board around them.

BIOS & Firmware

Corrupted firmware and boot-locked machines. Proof of ownership required.

Corrosion Repair

Where a spill has taken out one circuit and left the rest working.

We diagnose before we quote, and quote before we touch anything.

Spilt Something on It? Do This Now

What you do in the next hour matters more than anything we can do afterwards – and on a budget machine it often decides whether repair is possible at all.

  1. 1

    Switch It Off Now

Hold the power button until it dies. A wet board survives being wet; it does not survive being powered while wet.

  2. 2

    Do Not Plug It In

Not to charge, not to test. Every check you run costs you a component.

  3. 3

    Bring It In Today

Upside down, lid open, charger out. Rice does nothing. Time is the only thing that helps.

The dangerous case is the one that dried out and still works – liquid keeps eating the board for weeks, so the failure turns up a month later. We strip it, clean the board ultrasonically, treat the corrosion and replace what has gone. If your files matter more than the laptop, tell us when you drop it off and we take those first.

What We Do, How, and Why Us

Every Acer fault, from an Aspire screen to the work most shops will not take – boards repaired at component level, charging sockets re-soldered, hinges caught before they take the lid, and gaming machines stripped and repasted. One workshop in Wimbledon, and post-in from anywhere in the UK.

Diagnosis comes before a price, always. Microscopes, hot-air rework stations, a thermal camera and a meter to follow the power rails until the voltage stops. Parts are matched to the original specification and everything is tested before it goes back to you.

And because Acer machines are cheaper than most, we say when a repair is not worth it. That answer costs you the diagnosis and nothing else. It is the reason people come back with the next one.

Good to Know

The questions we are asked most about Acer laptops repairs.

Not answered here? Ask us – we reply the same working day.

Is my Acer worth repairing?

Sometimes not, and we will say so. A screen or a charging port on a three-year-old Aspire usually is; a new mainboard on a budget machine usually is not. We diagnose first, show you the figure against what the laptop is worth, and you decide. If the answer is no, you pay for the diagnosis and nothing else.

Acer quoted me for a whole motherboard. Can you do better?

Usually, yes. A service centre replaces the board because that is their process; we find the component that failed and replace that one. On an Acer that difference decides whether the repair happens at all.

How long will it take?

A battery or keyboard can often be done while you wait if we have the part. Screens are ordered for your exact model, usually a couple of working days. Board-level work and liquid damage need a few days on the bench.

Have you got the part for my model?

Batteries and keyboards for the current ranges are usually in stock or here next day. Screens are ordered against your exact model – most in two to three working days, high-refresh gaming panels longer. For models Acer no longer supplies we use tested original parts and tell you which.

My Nitro overheats and shuts down. Is the graphics card dying?

Usually not. It is nearly always blocked heatsinks and dried-out thermal compound, and a proper strip and repaste costs a fraction of a board. We measure temperatures under load before and after.

Do you repair school Chromebooks?

Yes, and in batches. Screens, hinges, keyboards and charging ports are most of it. We quote per unit, collect and return, and invoice the school rather than asking for a card at the counter.

We have Acers across the office or the school. Do you handle that?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Batches, invoicing, collection and return, one point of contact. Tell us how many and what is wrong and we will come back with a per-unit price.
